I read this during a stretch when I was in my head a lot. I'd been getting some feedback, and a couple of people had been detracting, as detractors do. They got into my mind. I started to feel like I couldn't do what I was made to do, and like a lot was going wrong. So I read a series of books to help me get past that, and Tim Keller's was one of them.

The Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness
The Path to True Christian Joy
By Timothy Keller

2012

I value Tim Keller's contribution to Christianity over the last thirty or forty years. But I didn't value this book much. The title is the whole point: stop thinking about yourself. That's a good reminder, but it wasn't a great help.

So do I recommend it? I'm not really sure I do. It's short and shallow. If Tim Keller weren't the author, I don't know that as many people would still be buying it or talking about it, if that many people even are.

Other books I read during that same stretch were better: Dangerous Calling by Paul David Tripp, The Search for Significance by Robert McGee, and Leadership and Emotional Sabotage by Joe Rigney. If you're in the same place I was, start there.
