In 2009, D. James Kennedy's historic Coral Ridge Presbyterian church agreed to merge with Tullian Tchividjian's New City church. What followed, according to news reports, was not smooth sailing for the grandson of Billy Graham. When I picked up this book I was looking for how Tchividjian dealt with the adversity he encountered and more of what happened behind the scenes. What I got was a message that all Christians need to heed. Jesus + Nothing = Everything by Tullian Tchividjian read by Adam Verner Crossway | ChristianAudio.com October 2011 Tchividjian breaks the concept down backwards and forwards taking the time to really dig into our cultural (and human) tendency to add to the Gospel and calls us to remove the additions like weeding a garden - only way more important. This message is one that the Christian church in America needs desperately to buy into. We've been so corrupted by our political leanings, cultural elitism, and hypocritical righteousness. Cut away all our preconceptions and additional rules and ideas about the Gospel and we can avoid the fate of the Pharisees and find the true Gospel that sets us free. While the message was excellent and timely, there were parts of the book that dragged. It may have been the narrator Adam Verner who's steady, yet slow, pace and earnest though passionless reading tended to run the message together for me. It could also be that Tchividjian's book was overly long and covered some things too many times. Whatever the cause I found that the middle of the book didn't move as efficiently as I'd have liked. It seems to me that this was more long form sermon than book. (I understand that it was also a sermon, so this makes sense.) While I didn't get the details behind the news that I was looking for I found a call to a pure Gospel that Christians should heed and a book that I recommend.
