Mary Saint is the ex-singer of the now defunct band Sliced Ham. She has almost given up on music since the death of her band member and lover Garbagio. Mary lives in San Francisco and has not seen her mother since the age of seventeen when she ran away from home. Mary's music at the present is pretty raunchy. Her mother, in the meantime, is struggling with her own ghosts.
Mary has been invited to give a concert at her old school - Swallow High. Her mother is worried, to say the least, as to how Father Benedict and the neighbors will react to Mary's music. Her songs - Sewer Flower and You're a Pig - just doesn't seem like the right music for children. Mary accepts the invitation and the big night arrives. She is a little hesitant at first, but as she gains confidence, she really gets into the music. The concert is a huge success.
Things turn out good in the end for Mary and her mother. They finally come to grips with the past and truly become friends.
The author Suzzy Roche, along with her sisters. Maggie and Terre, is the founding member of the singing group Roche.
Highly recommended. You will thoroughly enjoy this funny book - it is a joy to read.
