The love of history! That is how I would describe the story of Vivenne and Guthner in "The Solider's Wife." The Soldier's Wife by Margaret Leroy Voice June 2011 What I liked most about this story is how they romantizied the darkest period in American history. The story begins with a well to do family in the French Islands, but as WWII approached Vivenne's husband is sent to fight in the German war. As Vivienne tries to hold her home together while her husband is away, she is faced with a bigger challenge when the German soliders move in and take over their Guersey island. To much of Vivenne's surprise, she falls for the charm and eyes of Gunther, a German solider who is trying to stay as neutral as possible in this devastating war. Vivenne then begins to see exactly what type of war she is in and decides to play both sides after befriending a young man starving in a concentration camp. Now Vivenne must choose between her love next door or her love fo what is right. This was a great love story, enjoyable and entertaining. The ending was surprising and brought the whole book together. I recommend this as a good read.
