I really enjoyed this one, and it has a very unique beginning.

The world isn’t laid out clearly at first, but people go through a starter zone tutorial on the way to awakening their powers. Caleb Vale and his sister go through it together. She gets out into the real world with her powers. He doesn’t. His exit gate never opens.

Caleb is stuck there for seven years, running the same beginner trials over and over while they change, update and adapt around him. He becomes incredibly focused. He learns how everything works and gets better at all of it, but he never gets to pick a class. All he has are the starter skills, pushed further than anyone thought they could go.

It reminds me of Full Murder Hobo, a significantly less good take on someone stuck leveling forever. I got to the third book of that and never finished it. It was that boring. This one I enjoyed enough to keep going.

Spoiler alert: he does get out, and the full fruit of seven years of toiling and scrapping to survive comes due.

It also reminded me of Piers Anthony’s Battle Circle trilogy (Sos the Rope, Var the Stick, Neq the Sword), which I read as a teenager. The image I remember is a man punching sand to callous his hands, and that’s what Caleb’s seven years feel like.

There are LitRPG elements, but it isn’t crunchy. It’s mostly skill leveling. He’s overpowered, but he paid for it with seven years of torture.

I recommend it, and I’ll keep reading for the unique premise and his search for his sister.
